This book changed my life!

I have to begin by saying that this book was one factor in changing my life-- the other factor was the professor who required this book in my Organizational Development course. I was new to the field, but as a grad student quickly began to learn about the principles and practices of OD. This book provided in-depth information that was useful and practical. It was also written in a language that was clear and concise. If you are hesitant to fork out the money (I realize most text books are required and you may not have an option) just note that I still refer to this book for many work related tasks even though I graduated a few years ago. Even in my current program, I frequently go back to these authors and this book because I cannot find a better supporting literature for some of my papers. This is one book that will be with me for the rest of my life and I am so grateful to the authors for creating a masterpiece!

Accurate, sonorous transcription

The canon is lyrically beautiful and nearly universally famous. This transcription for the piano is satisfactory, a worthwhile transcription. So often, music seems to be written in big notes, with simplifications in both rhythm and harmony, just to make it easy for anyone to play without ever bothering to practice. It seems most of our sheet music is written for people who prefer just to sight read. This is much better than usual. It gives the real harmonic and rhythmic structure and is very pleasant to play and to hear. Some people will be able to sight read the score, but few, I think. Most people will need to practice it a few times. I play poorly. I have to practice lots of times.

Wonderful arrangement!

This is a wonderfully written arrangement. I was selecting from a variety of arrangements for a recent wedding I played in, but this piece did not make the cut. I would classify this as an entertainment solo piece rather than a wedding piece. It gets big and grand with a lot going on, which detracts from the focus of the wedding- the bride! However, I thoroughly enjoy playing it nonetheless!

It starts off by helping young people to understand what body image is and why it's important before considering negative body image and the impact a negative body image can have... The activities and case studies are all presented in an accessible and friendly style. The book is beautifully presented and I can imagine a young person being very motivated to complete the activities. In 1943, after reading about her in Pic Magazine, Ethel Barrymore wrote to Susan Anderson and offered to buy the dramatic rights to her life. "Doc Susie," then 73, responded "Fiddlesticks." Ethel Barrymore had good instincts: Doc Susie's life was dramatic. Virginia Cornell's straightforward, accessible biography begins in 1907 when Susan Anderson, already a practising physician, is dying of tuberculosis at the age of thirty-seven. She takes a death-defying train ride to the tiny, isolated high-altitude town of Fraser, Colorado, where she cures herself, then stays on for the next fifty-one years to treat the resident population of loggers, farmers, railroad personnel, and tunnel diggers. An opinionated woman, she is eager to lecture rural patients on the importance of vitamins, swing an axe at an illegal still, or tell off a farmer for treating his cows with more care than his pregnant wife. She refuses to use or prescribe any drugs, even painkillers. When telephones are installed, she tries one, then gets rid of it. She never buys a car; instead she hitches rides on horses, cars, and trains (sometimes on the cowcatcher if the ride is short). Compelling Biography

While Doc Susie’s story is interesting and inspiring in itself, author Virginia Cornell’s narrative approach is what makes the biography so compelling. Cornell grew up in Hideaway Park, two miles from Fraser where her parents established Miller’s Idlewild Inn near the West Entrance Portal to the Moffat Tunnel, which figures so prominently in the book . After she received her PhD in Renaissance English Literature from Arizona State University, she returned to manage her family’s ski resort as well as own and edit a small newspaper, the Winter Park Manifest. This fusion of Rocky Mountain resident, research scholar, and popular journalist combines to make Doc Susie one of the most readable and authentic biographies that I have encountered in a long time. First, Cornell knows firsthand the flora, fauna, climate, and personalities that make up small mountain communities, so the setting through which she moves her protagonist comes refreshingly alive. In this description, Cornell describes a barn dance. “Carrying baskets of fried chicken and potato salad into the bright interior of the barn she [Doc Susie] admired the clean-scrubbed pine floor, sprinkled with corn meal so the dancers could spin and shuffle even faster than if the floors had been newly waxed. Evergreen boughs and wildflowers were strung between stall braces. At one end, a planked platform for the musicians had been laid over tree stumps. Walking across the crunchy barn floor Doc enjoyed successive waves of smells: fresh pine, hay, rotted manure, neat’s-foot oil used on tack and harnesses, cinnamon cookies, lemonade”(118).

Cornell’s scholarly background taught her admirable research and writing skills, so she is able to weave into her narrative extensive investigation into early railroad history, pioneer doctors and their medical practices, the lumber industry, and the lives of women in early twentieth century along with personal interviews with residents of Fraser, family letters and photographs, and even a diary by Doc Susie herself. The Moffat Tunnel near Fraser played an important role in the town’s history, and nursing the injured as well as serving as Coroner kept her informed of the dangers of the work: “the ‘official’ count of men killed so far, kept by the Denver newspapers, lulled the public into thinking that construction on the project was relatively safe. Only when accidents were spectacular did they excite the interest of the press. Doc Susie knew that the tunnel death toll was, in fact, much higher. . . .Reading in the Denver Post or Rocky Mountain News about serious accidents to workers–accidents almost invariably attributed to ‘their own carelessness’ or ‘unpredicable circumstances’–Susie could not repress a bitter smile” (191) .When Cornell states in her “Author’s Note” that she wound (literally) her way through miles of microfilm of the Rocky Mountain News and the Denver Post, I felt an immediate kinship because I had researched those same microfilms for almost those same years for my biography of Elinore Pruitt Stewart. Rounding out her credentials is her journalism background, for she made what could have been a dreary, scholarly work into a life story that appeals to a wide audience.

Less a Biography, More a Novel

We haphazardly follow Doc Susie from her arrival in the Colorado timber country (1905) to the end of her life. It reads like fiction, with much detail and reported, verbatim speech which has to be invented by the author. No dates are provided, and as her life progresses we have to guess from minimal clues what year we are in. Early in the story she lectures a young woman on the need for vitamins -- the first vitamin was discovered in 1913 and it looks to me to be an author's invented anachronism. The book DOES give a good picture of the people and times in that location.

Engrossing memoir of a tortured, complicated woman

This book is not only my favorite autobiography, but it's also one of my favorite books of any genre. Francis Farmer, the infamous movie star who ended up institutionalized, was a tortured woman. This autobiography, which she wrote shortly before her death, is an extremely well-written, brutally honest, and mostly unflattering self-portrait. She tells of her relationship with her controlling and insane mother (who committed her), her unintentional rise to fame in Hollywood (she wanted to be a theater actress, and found Hollywood mostly empty), her emotional breakdowns, run-ins with the law, drinking problems, loveless marriages, and her time spent in a horrific state mental institution. Despite it all, Francis Farmer doesn't seem to feel a lot of self-pity, and she admirably takes responsibility for much of what happened to her. What really makes the book touching is Francis' description of what ultimately saved her: her friendship with Jean Radcliffe (who published the book after Francis died). Toward the end of her life Francis was able to find a lot of love and happiness, mostly due to the unconditional support she received from Jean and her family. This makes the book not only a juicy tale of a fallen Hollywood star and a disturbing memoir of a mental hospital, but an ultimately inspiring story about the healing power of love and friendship.

Five BIG Stars!!!

If you're looking for a book that will keep you interested from cover to cover, never able to put it down, this is the book for you! This is the autobiography of movie star, Frances Farmer, and her demise. It tells of her nightmarish mother (I found myself wanting to hurt her mother more than Frances herself wanted to), her tirades and outlandish temper, her many terrible years in a pit hole of mental institution where she was mistreated and abused and treated like an animal (literally), her struggle with drug and alcohol abuse and her experience with cancer. Whew! All in one book! There were times when I had to divert my eyes (which made it difficult to read) or set it down because I was ready to slap her mother around and my blood pressure was rising.
The most incredible thing about this story is, I believe, that Frances was fair. By that I mean that she told the story as it was and didn't make herself out to be completely blameless or less "violent" than she was. She told about her outbursts and her stupid behavior made from no-thought decisions. She never said, "Poor me," without adding something more justifiable to the pot.
The reading is incredibly easy. Her style (and that of the one who helped her write it) is very smooth and it seems as though everything she has to say is written in an interest-grabbing way.
So, if you want a good, heart-felt, blood stirring read, I HIGHLY recommend this book. It truly is one of the best I've been lucky enough to find. :o)

moving but misleading

It is a definite fact that this book was not written by Frances Farmer at all, but by Jean Ratcliffe, whose close relationship with Farmer was chronicled in the final chapters of this book. For legal reasons subsequent pressings altered the subtitle from "an autobiography by frances farmer" to an "autobiography of frances farmer." It's very disappointing that there really is no definitive biography by or about Farmer. I was deeply moved & horrified every time I read this book, but since Farmer isn't the author, it gives credibility to the many disputes that have arisen regarding the book's veracity. The same can be said about "Shadowlands," on which the 1982 film "Frances" is based. Farmer's sister wrote a biography of Frances entitled "Look Back in Love," but she had as much of an agenda as Ratcliffe may have had, only hers was to exonerate the Farmer family from the beating they'd taken in "Morning" & "Shadowland." Keep this in mind when you read the book(s). Frances Farmer's life is ripe for authentic documentation. This just isn't it.

The info is very practical

Interesting and useful info, if you can sort it out. The grammar and sentence structure is atrocious, to the point that it interferes with the writer getting his point across to the reader. Have your book proofread!

To be honest, I was a bit cynical

I get a bit fed up with these books on simplicity because usually they are so simple that they are almost patronising. However, this one is not one of those ones, it's truly a goodie. There is a lot of succinct but practical advice and suggestions about how to really keep things simple. Real gems. Doable stuff. Inspiring too. Practical stuff to keep you focused and achieving but without the overwhelm. I thought I knew it all about the techniques to keep things simple, minimal, zen and all that jazz, but clearly I didn't. Perhaps after this book now I do.
