Professor Michael A. Great start to new series...

I very much enjoyed the way the two characters were so different yet so much the same without even knowing it. The book held my interest from beginning to end and I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series. I'm also looking forward to getting to know other characters that were introduced throughout the book... but I sincerely hope we see more of these two characters in the future.

A slightly pear-shaped introduction to VC++.Net

The first thing I noticed about this text is the absence of the familiar colour coding used throughout the other volumes. Could this be a sign of publisher wariness, or simply cost cutting?
The book has much in common (including examples) with the other Deitel and Deitel .Net (C#, VB) volumes. Chapter development and layout is very similar. The standard of the material is mostly very good as one would expect, but topic coverage leaves something to be desired.
Firstly, it's a personal opinion, but I am not convinced that the several hundred pages devoted to web services is what students of C++ (and new professionals) need or want. Consequently, I ask myself whether this space should be shunted into a separate book. Secondly, there is a very small amount of space devoted to data structures, roughly 53 pages. Much smaller than needs be given the overall size of the book. Moreover, the reader only gets to data structures after 1000 pages of text. This apparent underemphasis on data structures raised a variety questions in my mind about the software engineering philosophy of the text. Thirdly, the book explicitly avoids dealing with ActiveX and COM. Attributes, a new feature in Visual C++ are mentioned in passing, and ATL is not mentioned at all.
Overalll, I am less postive about this book than their earlier proramming in C++ text. It seemed to me from reading the book, that there is a formula at play and material is shoehorned to fit accordingly. I fully acknowledge that much of the material is excellent and competently explained, but as an overall learning text on VC++.Net I think improvements are required.

Good book for Visual C++.

If you have at least some knowledge of C++ already and will be going Visual, then you will find that this book provides excellent material. This series of Programming books from Deitel & Deitel is very entertaining and informative, while providing an easy read. Recommended!

Useful but not quite enough

I found that this book gave me good general information on VC++.NET but not quite enough. When going through the book I tried to write the sample pieces of code as I was going and there was just not quite enough information on each of the samples for me to write it with out having to go and copy the code from the examples. Also it wasn't clear what the project settings should be set to. Eventually I figured them out but it just wasn't quite enough.

I have been a C++/MFC Developer for 6 years and am finding the transition to .NET quite difficult. This book has not been the help that I was hoping for. I know the programming concepts but actually getting the proper syntax to work for simple things is taking quite a bit longer and the book does not have what I need.

A quick amusing read; but not as good as the first one "Got Fangs?"

This is this the second book in the Goth series by Katie Maxwell. This book was written a while ago and it doesn't seem like Maxwell (who also writes as Katie MacAlister) is going to write anymore books in this series. This book wasn't nearly as good as the first book.

Fran and her mom are still traveling with the Goth Faire. Fran has got some issues when she accidentally calls a group of Viking warriors into existence and then her horse disappears. She has to fix up all this mess and on top of all this her and Ben are going on their first date.

I didn't enjoy this story as much as the first one. I didn't think the dialogue was as witty. The story between Ben and Fran doesn't make much progress. It is an easy read and somewhat amusing, but a lot of the humor with the Vikings is way over the top. There is a lot that is unresolved this book which was disappointing because this book was written a few years ago and no other books have been written in this series.

Overall a quick read, okay if you liked the first book. I wouldn't say this is a must read though. The characters are over the top and the action is kind of slapstick. I really did like the first book Got Fangs? So if you are in the mood for a quick and silly read this is an okay book; otherwise I would read something else.

I really wanted to love it

I really hate to say anything bad about Katie's books, because she is the genius behind "The Year My Life Went Down the Loo" and "They Wear What Under Their Kilts?" Those are two of the funniest books I've ever read, and I loved that whole series. I think because of that series I'm holding Katie up to an impossibly high standard. But I just didn't like the whole "Viking ghosts" and "Valkyries" aspect of this story. I check out Katie's website every day, and I know Vampires and the supernatural are her thing. Well, they're not mine, so maybe I should just stay away from those books. But I'm just so excited any time Katie has a new book coming out, hoping it'll be the next "Loo."

If I forget the fact that he's a vampire, I do like the parts about Ben and Fran and their fledgling courtship. I wish there had been more of that in this book. I'm also disappointed in the many typos and editing errors I found in this book. For a writer as big as Katie, I expect better. All in all, not a bad book if you're into the whole supernatural thing, which I suppose her target audience is.

14th Century Muslim Travelogue for Modern People

Ross Dunn, historian, has done a remarkable job of telling us about the travels and adventures of a man who traveled the world a half-century after Genoese adventurer Marco Polo taught Europe about the Orient. The difference between Polo and Ibn Battuta is that the latter simply left home as a young man to perform the Muslim religious duty of the hajj - the pilgrimage to Mecca and Medina - and got caught up in other projects on the road for the next couple of decades.

Ross' narrative is informed - he's a scholar who knows Arabic and is familiar with the history of Islam - and also very funny. His dry humor permeates the narrative and adds much readability to what might be otherwise unremarkable material. Examples include his observations about Ibn Battuta's Sunday shouting down with Quranic verses of the Christian bells in an Anatolian town and the story of Ibn Battuta being stripped and left with a flourish by sea pirates.

Ibn Battuta traveled in high Muslim circles throughout northern Africa, the Arabian neighborhood, ancient Turkey, Persia and India. Ross does a good job of qualifying the possible Chinese visit Ibn Battuta claims to have made. Later, near the end of his career, Ibn Battuta would penetrate the African heartland, ironically exploring his own continent last.

Highly recommended for students of Islam, world history of the Middle Ages, and travel adventures in general. Ross, in my opinion, exalts the material to five stars.

Interesting telling of history using a traveler's journey as a narrative thread

The story that this is based on is truly amazing. Traveling from Morocco to Mecca at age 21, Ibn Battuta finds he enjoys traveling so much that he gets as far as China and doesn't return home until 24 years later. He gets there through a combination of personal charm and taking advantage of the fact that one of the five pillars of Islam at the time was "almsgiving," or the sharing of material wealth with the poor, orphans, and wayfarers.

Using the travels of such a character as a narrative thread is a great way to tell the history of the region. Throughout Battuta's travels, Dunn fills in well-researched historical background information that helps paint a picture of what the Middle East was like so long ago. Unfortunately, though Dunn claims that Battuta was introspective, we don't see that much of his introspection in this book, and you'd have to be a real history geek to get the most out of this. We learn more about sacred sites, tribal conquests, and factual details about Battuta's journey than we do about people.

If you're a history buff, you'll love this. There's no question that Ibn Battuta deserves at least equal footing with Marco Polo as the greatest traveler writer of medieval times. If you're not a history buff, the narrative thread will help make it somewhat accessible. To a non-historian, 90% of this book consists of factual details that I'll forget by tomorrow. Personally, I wish I had read Dover Book's Travels of Ibn Battuta instead, which is a direct translation of Ibn Battuta's story.

World-Class Traveler !

It is incredible to think that back in the 1300's one person could have traveled from Morocco through North and East Africa, Syria, Iraq, Iran, Turkey, the Crimea, India, Ceylon, Indonesia and China. I get tired just writing about it! But this is what Ibn Battuta did. When you think of how difficult (and dangerous!) it was to travel back in those days, it is just amazing. What makes this book especially fascinating is the look it provides into Muslim society. Here was a man who journeyed thousands of miles over many, many years but who only very rarely felt himself to be a stranger in a strange land. In some places Islam was in the majority and in some places it was the minority but Ibn Battuta was always able to find educated Moslems similar to himself who could provide a place to live, food to eat, clothes to wear and money to spend. Very importantly also, they could provide spiritual support to a person very far from home. This book is best when it settles down in one place for an extended period, such as when Ibn Battuta journeyed to Medina and Mecca. This is the most important trip a Moslem takes during an entire lifetime and it is expected, health and finances permitting, that a believer will make the trip at least once in a lifetime. Medina is where the tomb of The Prophet is and Mecca was His birthplace. Mr. Dunn provides a physical description of the landscape of both places so that you can almost feel you are there and he also gives a fascinating description of the logistics of the journey as this is a trip that thousands of people would take each year and a solid support system was needed to provide transportation and food and water, etc. The religious ceremonies that a person was required to go through once in the Holy Cities is also given in great detail. The book is also very good when Ibn Battuta settles down in India for awhile and gets a nice, cushy government job working for a despot who sounds as though he was probably psychotic! You could be in his favor one minute but apparently if you looked at him the wrong way he might decide on the spur of the moment to have you executed. He would also come up with grandiose ideas to rearrange the entire society which would usually wind up making everyone miserable, if not dead. Kind of sounds pretty familiar, doesn't it? I guess some things don't change over the centuries..... Anyway, the only drawback to this book is that Mr. Dunn is trying to cram a lot of travel into a 300 page book so that some of the time you feel as though you are being given the "bum's rush" on one of those modern package trips where they shuttle you through 14 cities in 14 days. After awhile some of the itinerary starts to become one, big blur. It makes you wish that Mr. Dunn would have decided to write a longer book where things could have proceeded at a more leisurely pace. But this book is a good starting point and it gave me a glimpse into a world I knew very little about but would like to learn more of.
