As the poet delicately surveys the somewhat unsavory aspects of survival, the illustrator s hilarious watercolor-and-ink renderings defuse the deadliness of the subject matter. The result is an enriching overview of the natural world spiced with a Dorothy Parker esque sense of the macabre that children will absolutely relish. A telling example is Waste Management, in which a light treatment of the turkey vulture s carrion-loving ways It likes to feast before the worms, / which saves us all from stink and germs is dramatized. Serenely smiling, it pulls ruby, taffy-like sinews from a ribcage while a tiny fly rests on the tip of a cloven hoof separated from its former haunches by a bloody tire track. Other poems look at the wildly diverse ways in which organisms lure or capture their prey; still others break down sophisticated concepts like symbiosis and parasitism in brilliantly accessible terms. Amazing diversity of feeding strategies--and many rhyme!

Concise and interesting descriptions of odd strategies that animals--ranging from sloths to dermestid beetles--use to fill their bellies. There's even a poem about a carnivorous plant--the Venus Fly-Trap! Examples of feeding strategies covered include a description of how the little brown bat turns its body into a sort of bowl to scoop up insects at night, and how the wood turtle stomps the ground with its feet to make a sound like rain that convinces the worms to surface--whereupon the turtle--you guessed it--eats them. And where else are you going to find "species" rhymed with "feces"...? Illustrations are lively--capture the joy and desperation of eating and being eaten, respectively.

Great fun

What a terrific combination of quirky humor, scientific accuracy and beautiful illustrations! Even icky things are fun in this book. Every poem is uniquely laid out on the page with its illustration and many different kinds of rhythms and rhymes are used. Make sure to read all the way to the back of the book for the scientific info on each critter - I finally learned what a phalarope is. This book is good fun for everyone, kids and grown-ups alike. It's a real gift to the field of children's books.

An excellent, readable source of scientific information on a variety of animals, enhanced by extensive end notes. A great read for adults and students alike. About the Author
Shudo Denmei was born in Ohita, Japan in 1932. As a child he contracted pulmonary tuberculosis, but recovered through acupuncture and moxibustion treatments. He subsequently apprenticed to Miura Nagahiko (the acupuncturist who saved his life) and was trained in the Sawada style of acupuncture. He opened his own practice in 1959. Mr. Shudo began studying and applying the concepts of meridian therapy in his practice in 1968, and is now one of the leading instructors of the Japan Meridian Therapy Association, and a permanent member of its board. He is also president of the Traditional Japanese Acupuncture Society. His first book, Japanese Classical Acupuncture: Introduction to Meridian Therapy, has become a best seller in Japan and abroad. In 2010, Dr. Shudo was awarded the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Rays, by the Emperor of Japan. This award is presented to a select group of people who have distinguished themselves in service to their country and community.

clear, simple, elegant

This is one of the most helpful acupuncture books I have read in a long time. As others have pointed out, the author is extremely humble, sharing with us the difficulties he had in learning meridian therapy, especially pulse diagnosis, and simplifying the learning process for the reader. It is rare that a book is clear enough to enable a practitioner to implement new techniques without personal instruction. But Shudo Denmei writes as someone who remembers his own struggles in learning these techniques and offers clear instruction and many helpful hints. For example, he takes the procedure for six-position pulse diagnosis and breaks it down into manageable steps to be gradually learned. He encourages confidence in the reader that even incorporating these methods on an incremental basis will still greatly help your patients.

I practiced acupuncture for 9 years before making the decision to home school my learning disabled son, allowing my certification to lapse because I was unable to continue seeing patients. Now, 15 years later, I am studying for the exam to have my certification reinstated. In the course of my studies, I have become more and more disenchanted with TCM and drawn to Japanese acupuncture. It has much in common with my background in the Worsley 5-Element tradition, especially in the emphasis on six-position pulse diagnosis and providing a root treatment rather than primarily treating symptoms. My 5-Element training emphasized treating the patient's CF (Causative Factor) to enhance the patient's overall well being in body, mind, and spirit rather than simply attacking symptoms; however, sometimes it seemed too heavily focused on mind and spirit and less on the body. While this is a great strength of the Worsley method (and often lacking in other traditions), I did not always feel sufficiently equipped to address certain physical symptoms or conditions. The author makes the point that, since the Qi that supplies all of our life processes is contained in and travels through the meridians, when we treat the meridians the entire person is affected, from the organs and all parts of the body to the psyche and spirit. My background had emphasized treating the CF using points ON the meridians, but this book has given me a shift in focus to the importance of the meridians themselves.

This is so simple and profound, but had become lost to me as I struggled with exam review texts on TCM, with its point formulas and complex patterns which are really more appropriate for herbal medicine. I was shocked to read that, prior to learning Meridian Therapy, Shudo Denmei himself had practiced acupuncture for years without ever taking pulses! Coming from the Worsley tradition, that seemed impossible for me to believe; in 5 Element acupuncture one could hardly plan or carry out a treatment or check progress without careful pulse diagnosis. And yet in my TCM studies, pulse diagnosis focuses mainly on quality and is primarily used to confirm the symptom-based diagnosis, rather than to discern and treat the relative balance of the meridians themselves. In TCM, one could truly get by without ever taking pulses, and therefore completely miss out on an amazing window to the inner state of the patient's entire being. Simply put, this book teaches the reader to balance the meridians which carry our life force, which in turn will affect all aspects of a person's well-being.

This book is a treasure and worth more than the dozens of books I must wade through for the exam. It reminds me how beautiful acupuncture can be, and that the simplest treatment carefully chosen based on precise diagnosis is far better than many needles. And of course, there is much more here than pulse diagnosis; abdominal diagnosis, meridian palpation, needling technique, and other techniques are explained and made immediately usable by the reader. Whatever tradition of acupuncture you practice, take the time to read this book. You will feel a sense of peace and fresh inspiration in your vocation as an acupuncturist.

Scrutable

My interest in oriental medicine is serious and long-standing, although I have not had the chance to study formally at an established school. Ancient texts are seldom available in translation and can be extremely difficult to understand when they are available. Many of the more modern texts are quite dogmatic. Like second-rate cookbooks, they may give varying results for the home cook. Shudo Denmei's book is a wonderful gateway. It gives a very understandable "big picture" view of acupuncture as it developed from its origins to the present time. It gives extremely practical ways for a student to begin both study and early clinical experience. Without translation from theory to actual practice, no such book is worth anything. This book is the most practical I have seen at making this transition to clinical experience possible. So, this is a wonderful place to begin. On the other hand, the author also outlines very clearly at least one respectable path to mastery of the higher complexities of acupuncture practice. The text can, then, guide a person through long stages of improving practice. There are other wonderful books (consider, as an example, Dr. Manaka's book), but I know of no other text that is nearly as helpful or as practical, particularly for a person like me. I have great desire, but I don't catch on easily. Thanks to the author.

About the Author
Jon Kieffer (MEF-CECP) is a principal technical writer working for Fujitsu Network Communications since 2001. Previous to that, Jon taught software engineering at the University of Hull, U.K., and mechanical engineering at the Australian National University. Jon holds BS, MS, and PhD degrees in mechanical engineering and has authored 12 refereed journal articles and more than 30 conference papers in the fields of mechanical and controls engineering. The MEF has recognized Jon as an outstanding contributor for contributions to the MEF-CECP program in 2013, 2014 and 2015. In 2015, Jon received the MEF Marketing Committee Editors Award for co-editing the MEF white paper Understanding Bandwidth Profiles in MEF 6.2 Service Definitions. Yongchao Fan (CCIE R&S #6369) is a product support engineer working for Fujitsu Network Communications since 1999 and previously worked for IBM as a global services engineer. Yongchao holds BS and MS degrees in computer science and has extensive experience with various networking technologies and real-world networks.

Best way to organize major concepts

I recommend reading this either before or after the more advanced text, depending on your learning process. Before, if you need an initial organizational framework to introduce the CE concepts. After, if you want to make a global sense of where the details fit in the big picture as well as what the details are meant to address.

Great book for learning concepts.

This book provides background for understanding Carrier Ethernet. It covers a lot of ground and is more technical than I expected, but it's easy to follow because of the author's accessible writing style and the many illustrations. Overall: great value.

A Ripping Good Yarn!

Being a friend to the authors and having read quite a few of their letter/email stories, it was with great anticipation that I began Bodice Rippers. And I wasn't disappointed!

The story seems disjointed and yet falls together in a most charming and funny way. Between the two leading protagonists, some hot guys, several accents of questionable nature and a lot of misadventure, I would have to admit this story had me literally 'lol'ing'. Seriously. Even now, almost 2 days later, I still chuckle over the line about teh security guard's mother and satan.

This story is a must for anyone with a sense of the ridiculous and a great sense of humour. The authors have both of these things in abundance and it's a great thing they are now sharing with others. Five stars ladies, five stars!

Engineering for racers

"Engineer to Win " by Carroll Smith is the third book in his series of hands on guides to racing. Anyone who has read his earlier books, "Tune to Win" and "Prepare to Win" has probably already ordered this book. Those out there haven't been introduced to Carroll Smith are in for a very enjoyable experience. All to often engineering books written by engineering professors for engineers are technically correct but drier than a popcorn fart. Smith is just the opposite. His sense of humor and down to earth writing style are a welcome relief to readers used to struggling to get through technical manuals. He teaches you basic engineering principles in easy to understand terms for the layman. This volume contains an excellent crash course (excuse the pun) in metalurgy. While he has been there and done that and doesn't B.S. you, he manages to not come off like a know-it-all. In fact, when he's not an expert on the subject, he'll tell you so and send you elsewhere for the information. For example on composites he'll send you to an experimental aircraft source because that's where the cutting edge of that technology lies. I give this book, my highest rating and recomend it to racers, fans, and anyone who ever wanted to get in to racing. Although you may want to start with one of his earlier books first, the wealth of information contained, and the manner in which it's presented in this series is enough to single handedly move you from the grandstands to the pits. Just Get the Book. It is that good! Period.

I have read many books pertaining to chassis design, construction techniques, automotive materials selection, suspension design, engine design, engine components and construction, aerodynamics, downforce, sheetmetal fabrication, welding, machining, car tuning, etc. Few I have read more than twice. This is one of those few books. But why?
Carroll Smith presents the information logically, clearly and with the correct amount of depth so that you may make cognizent decisions. He is able to write in such a way that it reads easily...as though you have recorded your conversation as he answers your many questions. It is not dull, engineering jargon but interesting, factual data presented well. It would be nice if all subjects were as well documented and presented. A thanks to Mr. Smith for sharing the information. It must have taken many years (and lessons) to gather.
The pictures are done well, the graphs and tables present the information clearly and adequately backup his statements. If you read the book and absorb all that is presented for you, you will be a much wiser individual for the experience. You will be a better racecar builder AND a better driver as you will understand what is happening as you navigate the course.
I would recommend not only this book but the entire "to WIN" series as they all share these traits.

Not really a book on engineering

Smith's books have become bibles for many racers. This one has very good sections dealing with detail aspects of race car systems although it felt like something was missing in the area of suspensions. But suspensions require their own book so that is probably unavoidable.

Smith spent nearly the first third of the book explaining the history, refining, and structure of steel. Interesting stuff but what he was getting to was why ferrous metals fail, and not all of the information in the first third of the book was required for that. And this is a metals book, he had little experience with composites and there is really no useful information about them in the book.

All of his information on threaded fasteners is in his fastener book (which is very good) so reducing that would have made more space for info about race car systems.

I was surprised to see that much of his info about welding was either outdated or incorrect according to the American Welding Society.

So, don't expect too much from this one and check critical information with other sources.
