Daily Meditations That Will Benefit Anyone Reading Them

Like the other books in Tan Book's "A Year With ..." series, A Year With the Saints has 365 one-page meditations. As is obvious from the name, it takes you through a year with the saints as your spiritual guides.

Each reading begins with a brief summary from author Paul Thigpen to orient the reader to the subject. Then an excerpt from a saint's writings brings a topic to light. This is followed by a question or two which help readers relate fully to what was just read. A brief prayer ends the session. In case you want to know a bit more about a particular saint, there is a brief biography of each in the back of the book.

Tan Books has done this book proud, as with all those in the series. Even if you prefer e-books, this is one you want to hold in your hands, just trust me on this. The cover may not be actual leather but it certainly feels like it. Pages are gilt-edged and the ribbon marker is sturdy. Moreover, the book design is elegant and decorative in an understated but classic way. A Year with the Saints is not only useful but a book that could become an heirloom in your family. Readers will know that I do not give this praise lightly.

I've been reading an entry a day since I received the book, which means I'm up to the 7th or 8th one. So far I've been reminded of the marvel that Scripture achieves in having simple meanings and complex meanings in the same passages, perfect for whichever need you have. I've been reminded of the fact that the reason God can work miracles is because he made nature ... and so he has power over it. And, I've been reminded that faith and reason go hand in hand. I'll be honest. I didn't need reminding of this particular concept, but I like the way St. Thomas More puts it so much that I'm going to be using some of his practical examples when I'm speaking to others on the subject.

Paul Thigpen did a terrific job of putting together this series of meditations and they will benefit anyone who reads them.

AWESOME and GLORIOUS!

Never before have I read such a compendium of spiritual guidance from so many saintly personages who have apparently reached an incredible degree of holy perfection. Every page shines and sparkles with blessed inspiration, as if God Himself had spoken directly to my heart. Each saint's incisive quotations and relevant stories immensely increased my motivation to improve my spiritual life and enabled me to see so many previously hidden flaws in it. The book is truly the cream of all spiritual knowledge and wisdom--just reading it has had a deeply transformative effect on my soul! Highly recommended!No price is too high to pay for this rare masterpiece.

Best daily meditative book I've used

The format of this book is laid out where each month focuses on a specific virtue that leads one to perfection. Each day there is a brief quotation from a saint followed by a meditation that corresponds with the said quotation. I have read many devotional books over the years yet this is the one that I always want to go back to. The stories it relays and the words of holy wisdom it contains is priceless. Anyone who's seeking a book that helps them become a better, more holy person should consider getting their hands on this book. Yes it's currently out of print, so it costs more, but I wouldn't miss the opportunity to add this to my Catholic library. A must read.

The practice of writing, even just one sentence a day, can be a powerful tool in gaining perspective on your happiness, fulfillment and pleasure.

This book is laid out so that you log one sentence a day for five years, and you cycle back through the journal each year to do so. This means Your five Feb. 14 entries will be on the same page, one under the other. Having just started this particular journaling practice, I'm not sure how I will feel about rereading the journal this way, but have been enjoying the invitation to maintain a brief daily journaling practice.

Little book,,,big commitment

I bought this book for myself and for my daughter. We are both huge fans of Gretchen Rubin and her happiness project. I thought it would be a nice way to quickly journal ideas and blessings. But the book, while well made and attractive, is too small to be able to easily write in. I find I am scrunching my handwriting so I have room to write enough of a thought to make it meaningful.
I have made the commitment to doing this for at least a year, but I find it more frustrating than fun. I can't imagine doing it for the full 5 years.
